As fighting intensifies around the port city of Hodeida, the United Nations has announced plans to double its food aid to Yemen to avert mass starvation. The UN’s World Food Program said the situation was worsening so fast that it was preparing to feed 14 million people, almost half the population of the country.
Police in Ethiopia say they have discovered a massive grave containing about 200 bodies near the border between the Somali and Oromia regions of the country. The state-affiliated broadcaster Fana says the grave was found during an investigation into alleged atrocities committed under the former President of the Somali region, Abdi Mohammed.
The gunman who killed 12 people in a bar outside Los Angeles has been identified as a former US marine. It’s still not clear why 28-year-old Ian David Long carried out the attack in an area which has been talked as one of the safest in America. He’s believed to have shot himself.
A group of 19 women and children seized by the Islamic State group in Syria 4 months ago have been released. Official media said the army rescued the captives who are from the local Jewish minority northeast of the city of Palmyra, but other sources said the hostages were released as part of a prisoner swap.
The United States has imposed further sanctions on a number of people and organizations in connection with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Two Ukrainians and one Russian have been targeted along with 9 entities from both countries.
And the French composer Francis Lai who wrote the score for one of Hollywood’s box office successes, Love Story, has died at the age of 86. He won an Oscar in 1970 for the film pointing into piano theme, but was best known in France for his work with the director Claude Lelouch, including the title track from A Man and a Woman in 1966. He wrote music for more than100 films.
