The 12th Shanghai International Film Festival will begin on June 13 and will see a record 1,925 films, including 1,270 full-length features.Sixteen films, including Empire of Silver (Baiyin Diguo) starring Hong Kong star Aaron Kwok, will compete for the Jin Jue Award.Besides the regular Film Market and Film Seminar, this year's nine-day festival will have a theme screening. Ten movies by master director Alfred Hitchcock will be shown for the first time, as well as six films of French actress Isabelle Huppert and some of Korean director Lm Kwon-taek.
A theme screening of the 50-year anniversary of the New Wave Movement will also open during the festival and present signature works of Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard.
And John Woo's historical epic "Red Cliff" is to be released in North American movie theaters later this year, marking the director's first US release in six years.Magnet Releasing says it has bought the American rights and will release it this fall. The film will be released in Canada at the same time."Red Cliff", about an ancient Chinese battle of the same name, was Hong Kong native Woo's first Chinese-language film since the 1992 action thriller "Hard-Boiled".The two-part film will be released in North America as a single installment for Western audiences but both Asian installments will be issued on DVD and video-on-demand services.
A rock 'n' roll ballet, featuring the music of Pink Floyd, will be of one of the spearheads of this year's Beijing Modern Music Festival. French choreographer Roland Petit's Pink Floyd! will be performed by the National Ballet of China and is certain to dazzle festival goers at the 2009 Beijing Modern Music Festival, which begins today and runs to May 26.The festival will also stage a special version of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, and also puppet show from Fujian province, as well as many other events. Most of the activities will be held at the Central Conservatory of Music, but some of the important performances will be held at the Beijing Concert Hall and Beijing Tianqiao Theater.
Singer Man Wenjun Arrested On Drug Offence
Senior Chinese pop singer Man Wenjun has been taken into custody by Beijing police on drug offence.Wow,this is just unbelievable.The Beijing Times reports that Beijing police raided a nightclub near the Workers' Stadium early Monday morning after receiving an anonymous tip-off, where they found illegal drugs in Man's VIP-room.The star, celebrating his wife's birthday with friends, was tested positive for a banned substance.
His wife and friends were also taken into custody by police for using banned drugs.Further investigation is now underway.
40 year-old Man is considered to have a unique style within China's often fickle and fancy pop scene. The star gained his fame in 1996 for his song 'I Understand You All the Time'.
