In Pakistan, a suicide bombing this morning has killed at least ten people and injured dozens of others in the city of Peshawar.

It is feared the attack is a retaliation for a Pakistani military offensive against the Taliban that has caused civilians to flee the nearby Swat Valley. More from ABC's Nick Schifrin.

They carry only the clothes on their backs. Almost a million people fled the war zone, taking advantage of a brief lifting of a military curfew in the Swat Valley. They are scared of militants and scared of getting caught up in one of Pakistan’s most aggressive campaigns against the Taliban.

“The army reached here and started firing”, he says, “Now my house and my vehicle are completely destroyed.”

These children had to walk eight hours after the army occupied their school. They are orphans with nowhere else to go but this building that usually treats drug addicts.

“The army and Taliban were firing to each other, and we are in the hostel.”

“Do you miss your home?”

“Yes”

Tens of thousands are living in overcrowded tent camps with little food or water. They are often separated from their families.

“I lost two of my sons during the evacuation”, he says, “We don’t have any information about them.”

People fled after the military asked them to and now that most residents have come to camps or bigger cities. The army says it will better be able to avoid civilian casualties and take this fight street to street.

The government says this fight will determine the very survival of the nation. But it won’t be easy.
