Xi'an: No plan to ban bicycles

The city of Xi'an is not planning to ban bicycles, after all.

Local authorities in Xi'an denied trying to ban bikes in parts of the city in an announcement posted on the local government's website.

A local newspaper, Sanqin Daily, had recently reported that Xi'an's vice mayor, Zhu Zhisheng, said that the city was planning to ban tricycles, bicycles and motorcycles in scenic spots and main streets of Xi'an because they are bad for traffic and hurt the city's image as an international tourist destination.

Bicycles are the most popular personal transportation vehicles in many Chinese cities. For example, there are an estimated 7.5 million bikes in Beijing among its nearly 17 million permanent residents, according to official figures.

Naturist retreat may cause stink

A naturist swimming resort will open in Eastern China's Zhejiang Province tomorrow.

The resort in Lin'an County is the second attempt by locals to start a naturist tourist site.

The first nude pool in Lin'an opened five years ago but was closed two weeks later under fierce public criticism.

The resort consists of two 300-square-meter natural ponds halfway up the mountain, one for men and one for women. The women's pool is 100 meters away from the men's. A thick bamboo grove blocks the view between the ponds and security are ready to chase away peeping Toms.

The move has ignited heated discussion in China, where public nudity is still taboo.

More than 40 percent of netizens said "yes" to the naturist resort while 30 percent regarded it as immoral in a survey by Zhejiang Online.
