Shanghai citizens were abuzz Wednesday with news the city will soon become host to a Disney park on the mainland. China central government has given the Walt Disney Company permission to build a theme park in Shanghai, which residents appeared to back.

Shanghai is a very vibrant city, so I think for the consumers here, we like it very much. So this means we have a new place to party and a new theme park to play in. I think whether it's for the government or for consumers like us, this is a very good improvement.

Disney looks to make greater inroads in the world's most populous nation and No. 3 economy. Local residents meanwhile say the project would directly benefit the people living near the remote site over an hour's drive from the city centre.

Shanghai is a big international city. I would say there are very few big theme parks like Disneyland in the country. So for the people in Shanghai, we would welcome it very much.

The announcement keeps years of on again off again talks between Disney and Shanghai, reflecting the tough road that western media firms have faced in China. The estimated price tag for the park is 3.6 billion dollars. But Disney hopes it will fare better than its Hong Kong property, which has struggled with losses since opening in 2005.
