奥巴马:中东和平没有捷径

2011-10-05来源:Sky news

It wasn't supposed to be like this. An Israeli checkpoint was stoned, the response, inevitable. Amid the worst voilence in weeks, the Israelis deployed a new riot control method--ear piercing sound, 153 decibels. It's impossible to be near it. That scattered the Palestinians, but they would re-group.

It was supposed to be like this. And for the thousands of people who gathered peacefully, it was, a kind of atmosphere and a simple message.

"When we'll be free, freedom, we can do anything we want without being afraid and worry about what will happen tonight or today. And our brothers will be with us, not in, with Isreal, and good."

"And nobody would control our life."

Some youth tried to burn the US flag, there was little support. As they ran from the scene, from the stage came the message, we don't want to burn flags, we want to raise our own. Israeli TV crews could film without any hostility. It's how the Palestinian leadership wants it.

But as the Party broke up, news came in, that the earlier voilence has spread across the West Bank. In Hebron there were fierce clashes. Nablus also saw trouble, as it bit Omar. And shots were fired at an Israli car near a settlement. Back at the Qalandia checkpoint, the skirmishing went on all day, may last all the week.

"We have had a lot of stones throwing from the Palestinian youth on one side and tear gas being used here by the Israli forces. But it's relatively small scale. The fear is though, that on Friday, when tensions may be raised, things like this could escalate.Tim Marshall, Skynews, near Ramallah, in the West Bank."

Tim Marshall there. We'll speed to the United Nations in New York this afternoon. Barack Obama said only direct talks between the Palestinians and Israelis could lead to peace.

"Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations, if it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now. Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians who must live side by side. Ultimately, it is the Isrealis and the Palestinians, not us, who must reach agreement on issues that divided them, on boarders and on security, on refugees and Jerusalem. Ultimately, peace depends upon compromise, among people who must live together long after our speeches are over, long after our votes have been tallied. That's the lesson of Northern Ireland, where ancient antagonists bridge their differences. That's the lesson of Sudan, where negotiated settlement led to an independent state. And that is and will be the path to a Palestinian state."
