俄美外交官会面讨论乌克兰危机

2014-03-09来源:CRI

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and EU diplomats in Pairs in connection with the crisis in Ukraine.

Without going into detail, Lavrov says the diplomats had a long day of discussions, and have agreed to continue their talks in the coming days.

For his part, John Kerry says Washington has renewed its call for Russia to speak directly with Ukrainian authorities, on top of sending its troops back to their bases.

"Russia can now choose to de-escalate this situation, and we are committed to working with Russia, and together with our friends and allies, in an effort to provide a way for this entire situation to find the road to de-escalation."

Meanwhile, NATO has announced a full review of its cooperation with Russia after a separate meeting in Brussels.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the organization is suspending a joint mission with Russia involving the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons.

This comes on the heels of a decision by the European Union to offer a 15-billion US dollar aid package to Ukraine.

As the diplomatic wrangling continues, hundreds of demonstrators waving Russian flags have stormed a government building in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.

The region is ousted President Viktor Yanukovych's home territory.

Yanukovych fled Ukraine after being kicked out of his position by parliament.

The fresh protests in Donetsk come as a standoff continues in the Crimea between Ukrainian soldiers and troops loyal to Russia.
