Ed Ow has worked for tech startups in China (Taiwan), and now he’s at a virtual reality startup in Silicon Valley.He says trying to start a business in Asia was much tougher than in Silicon Valley.
Ed Ow曾在中国台湾的科技创业公司工作过，如今他任职于硅谷的虚拟现实创业公司。据他表示，在亚洲开办一家公司比在硅谷困难得多。

It’s a lot harder getting investors, and they are a lot more real in terms of, you know,Hey, you have to generate a business model very early on and make money early on in order to support yourself.’“Ow says investors are more comfortable with risk in Silicon Valley.”
“在亚洲要吸引投资人真是比这里难得多，因为他们在以下这个方面真的是这样的，你知道吧，‘嘿，你得赶紧打造出一个商业模式，早点盈利，这样才能维持自己的生意。’Ow称，硅谷的投资人更习惯承担风险。”

You know, you have a great idea, great! Go and push it out.We’ll invest money into it and figure out the business model along the way."

Silicon Valley investor Tuoc Luong had worked in a Chinese Internet company.He says the big reason behind the difference is how risk and failure are viewed.
硅谷投资者陈德良曾经在中国一家互联网公司任职。他说这种差异背后的主要原因是人们如何看待挑战与失败。

“Asia has put too much weight on how other people view the perception of you.So when you fail, there’s a perception of “you didn’t succeed”; but it’s worse than that.Because then it affects the parents that say, ’Oh my son didn’t succeed.’"
“亚洲人太过重视他人对自己的看法。因此你一旦失败，在人们看来就是‘你没有成功’；然而现实更加糟糕。因为它会影响你的父母，导致他们从口中说出，‘是啊，我的儿子没能成功。’”

In Silicon Valley, failure is not viewed negatively among the investors.
在硅谷，投资者们并不会把失败当做是坏事。

They don’t avoid people who have failed because they see, okay, they’ve learned something from that.
“他们不会拒失败者于千里之外，因为在他们的眼中，好吧，他们已经从中学到经验教训了。”

Entrepreneur Ben Tran says even though failure is viewed more positively here, it’s still tough when it happens.
企业家Ben Tran表示，即使在硅谷人们对待失败的态度更加积极一点，但真正遭遇失败的时候还是很艰难。

There’s been a lot of people who go into depression - people who potentially commit suicide.
“有很多人陷入无比沮丧的漩涡——他们可能最终会选择自杀。

There’s a tremendous amount of pressure when it comes to starting your own company.You’re tied to something with your ego and your identity."

But Tran says entrepreneurs from around the world just keep coming to Silicon Valley,dreaming of becoming the next Google or Facebook.
不过Tran表示，尽管如此，还是有世界各地的企业家源源不断地来到硅谷，梦想成就下一个谷歌或者脸书。

You read about it in the press and that has generated a lot of folks who do want to strike it rich, people who have a gold rush mentality.

Many of the entrepreneurs from overseas come with a strong technical knowledge but they may not have the soft skills.
许多从海外过来的企业家都有扎实的技术知识，但却不见得具备软技能。

It’s your ability to recruit top talent, your ability to get top talent to work together well,your ability to communicate your vision in a way that inspires them."
“所谓软技能，就是你招募顶尖人才的能力，是你让顶尖人才良好协作的能力，也是你以一种激励人的方式沟通自己愿景的能力。”

Silicon Valley investors are not only looking for these skills in the US but also overseas.
硅谷投资人不仅在美国寻找这些成功技巧，在海外也是广泛搜索。

There are parts of the world that are developing outside of Silicon Valley that are matching it in terms of drive and innovation,and we’re starting to see that in parts of China."
“世界上有一些地区，虽然在硅谷之外发展，但如今它们的发展水平在驱动和创新方面已经可以与硅谷相媲美了，我们现在在中国的一些地方就可以看到这个现象。”

Investors from China also are involving.
来自中国的投资人也涉足其中。

They come to the States, and they invest a lot around this area and they bring it back to China,and they encourage people in China to actually innovate also."

And innovation is not just happening in China, but throughout Southeast Asia as the use of technology spreads.
