山东农民小麦大丰收

Much of China's Yangtze River region is currently battling the worst drought conditions in 50 years. But it's not all bad news in the agricultural sector. Farmers in Shandong Province, one of the country's major wheat-producing areas, are expecting higher wheat output this summer.
中国长江中下游大部分地区正遭受50年来最严重的旱灾。但是这对农业并不全是坏消息。中国主要的小麦产地之一山东，农民今年夏天有望获得更高的小麦收成。

Lingxian County, in the eastern part of Shandong Province, suffered from heavy drought this spring.

But due to the high soil moisture level and effective measures adopted by the local government, the drought did not cause much of a negative impact to wheat production in the region.

Du Changlin, agronomist of Lingxian County, said, "In our highest-yielding field, wheat production this year could reach nearly 8.2 million ears for each hectare. That means the production increases more than 6 percent per unit of area. It's the best production volume in years."

Even for ordinary plots, the harvest is better than last year.

Wheat yield this year reached around 8 million ears per hectare, surging more than 2.4 million ears compared with last year.

Zhu Xiuyan, Deputy Party Secretary of Lingxian County, said, "There will be more bad weather ahead. But if it's not too catastrophic, our irrigation measures are effective enough to ensure the wheat harvest."
陵县副党委书记朱秀岩说：“未来会有更多坏天气。但是如果破坏不太严重，我们的灌溉措施就足够有效确保小麦丰收。”

Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture show wheat growth in other neighboring areas are also better than last year.
农业部的数据显示，附近其他地区的小麦生长也比去年好。

In addition, China's area for cultivating wheat expanded more than 60-thousand hectares this year, which shored up a solid basis for this year's harvest.
