US President Barack Obama on Wednesday sought a high profile and politically provocative venue to unveil his new economic plan, asking to address Congress on the same night that Republican presidential candidates plan to hold a debate.

In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama asked for a joint session of the House of Representatives and Senate on Septembeer 7th to lay out his plan to create jobs, boost economic growth while reducing the budget deficit. The president said, Washington needs to put aside politics and start making decisions based on what is best for the country.

There's been no immediate response to the president's request from House Speaker John Boehner, whose Republicans control that chamber. The House and the Democratic-controlled Senate must pass a joint resolution to assemble Congress for Obama's presentation.
