Zhang Yimou's block-buster "the Flowers of War" has taken in 540 million yuan at the box office in 21 days since it hit the cinema in mid December. In retrospect of the year of 2011, China's movie market itself could be hailed as the flowers of war, blooming out of the fierce engagement without powder.

While those expensive movies boast with their fantastic shots and moves, low-bugdet movies do not shun from putting a finger in the pie. To occupy a highland in movie market, different themes have been brought upon the increasingly critical Chinese audiences.

2011's first punch started with "Shaolin Temple." It pits the cut-n-dried theme of martial arts against one of guns and power. Blowing up a life-sized model of the real "Shaolin Temple" didn't have the desired effect at the box office when competing with the low-budget film "My Own Swordsman."
