People looking forward to family reunions this year now have more choices than ever when it comes to buying a ticket home. Railway tickets can now be booked over the internet and by phone. But for some migrant workers, whose hometowns are popular destinations during Spring Festival, getting tickets is still far from easy.

Shao Quanjie is like most migrant workers this time of year. He just wants to go home. His last family reunion was six years ago. And this year, the family are particularly motivated to make the journey, all because of a call from home.

Liu Xia, Shao Quanjie’s wife, said, "My mother back in my hometown is eager to see us during spring festival. She misses the children so much, and it’s been years since they last met. "

Most of the furniture in Shao’s home was scavenged from the streets. Half of the meager wages he earned this year was spent on the education of his two children. His son who has never had the chance to go home, and his daughter is particularly looking forward to the family reunion.

Daughter: "Seeing my grandma is the most important thing. She asked us to come home many times, but I haven’t been able to promise."

Mother: "We’re determined to take them home this year, no matter how packed the train will be."

The couple decided to buy seats for the two children, rather than have them stand, as the trip home will take about 10 hours.

Shao wanted to buy tickets at the railway station, the method he is familiar and comfortable with. But, due to his busy work schedule, he asked his brother Guo Xuefa to buy the tickets for him. Waiting in line in temperatures of minus ten degrees centigrade is a physical and mental challenge for the would-be travellers.

A staff member in Beijing West Railway Station, said, "It’s cold for those waiting outside, so we have reduced our lunch time to improve efficiency."

Guo got his turn after 20 minutes in line. The brothers decided to get up earlier the next morning, as they believed this might increase their odds of getting tickets.
Guo Xuefa

They are even calling a taxi for the first time in 11 years. But all Shao could do was to promise his children that he would try his best to make their family reunion a reality.
