As the 100th anniversary of the world-famous Titanic sinking approaches, items from the ship will be put up for sale at an auction for the first time in history. New York-based auction house Guernsey's will be offering the complete collection of objects.

Nearly 100 years after the Titanic's first and final voyage, more than 5,500 items have been found at the ship wreck site two and a half miles below the ocean's surface. The collection of artifacts vary from small personal objects to highly decorative items. Some reflecting the elegance of the Titanic, and some more functional items from giant sections of the hull.

Arlan Ettinger, president of Guersney's Auction House, said, "That first expedition was successful and many hundreds of objects were recovered, which led to six more expeditions to the site over 17 years, totalling 5,500 artifacts from the wreck of the Titanic."

Due to a court decision, the collection is being sold only in its entirety. The court also deemed that the items must be properly maintained and placed on view for the public. The artifacts are currently owned by RMS Titanic, Inc., a division of Premier Exhibitions, Inc.

Data and videos from numerous recovery missions will accompany the artifacts in the sale. Some of these items include 3-D images of the ship, video of dives and the first and only comprehensive survey map of the wreck site.

An appraisal of the collection has been listed at $189 million US dollars.

The auction will take place on April 11 at the Intrepid museum in New York City - less than one mile from where the Titanic was supposed to dock on arrival.
