FW: I've been asked to write a piece about Russian Ballet. and I don't know where ro start! You're interested in dance, any ideas?

MW: Well, actually Russian Ballet isn't Russian at all. It was introduced by foreigner, in the 17th by the second Romanov ruler Tsar Alexis Mikhaijovich.

FW: OK, for what reason?

MW : He wanted to watch it during his wedding celebrations. Then, Peter the Great took a personal interest in dancing at his court by bringing in western dances and taking part in them himself.

FW : But was that really the formal beginning? I thought it began in a letter written in 1737 to the Empress Anne by the teacher of gymnastics at the Imperial Cadet School. The letter said: "I humbly ask Your Majesty that I shall be given twelve children-six males and six females--to create balletrs and theatre dances".

MW: That's right, and in 1738 the first Russian Ballet School was set up. It was a small school, with just two rooms in the Old Winter Palace.

FW : Didn't that school go on to become the St. Petersburg Ballet School? Very famous, I think.

MW: Yes, it did. But the first great period of ballet didn't begin until the 1800s. A Frenchman, Charles-Louis Didelot is considered to be the " father of the Russian ballet. " He put on productions there.

MW: Nowadays it's a bit different though. Take Rudolf Nureyev for example, he died when he was in his 50s, much older than some of the early teenage dancers.

FW: I think he must be the most famous Russian ballet dancer. He danced with Margot Fonteyn. they were known as "Rudi and Margot".

MW: Russian influence on ballet continues today, both through visits from Russian companies and the activities of defecing Soviet dancers such as Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Mikhail Barishnikov.
