名人教英文：选用前置词的两个“贴士”

如何选用前置词是学习英语的一大难题，其中有两点值得注意。
一、有些名词和其形容词形式所配的前置词一样，但也有些要配不同的前置词。

awareness of（形容词aware同样配of）

?angelina jolie's mastectomy (乳房切除手术) has raised awareness of gene testing for cancer.
?people are becoming more aware of their health nowadays.
fondness for（形容词fond配of）
?john has a fondness for jazz.
?mary is very fond of her niece.

二、选用不同的前置词可能带出不同的意思，例如：

agree with someone/ an opinion (同意), agree to a proposal (答应), agree on an arrangement (达成协议)
?i agree with his analysis of the situation.
?do not sign the contract if you do not agree to the terms.
?the buyer and the seller have agreed on the price.
argue with a person (和一个人争辩), argue about/over a matter (就一个议题争论) 及argue for/against a proposition (提出理由支持/反对一个命题)

?johnny always argues with his sister over who should do the dishes.

?some lobby groups in the united states argue against stricter gun control laws despite the high gun death rates.
compare with (比较) 及compare to (比作)

?the researchers compared distant learning with classroom-based instruction in terms of effectiveness.
?life is often compared to a drama.
