Sibyl: You look exhausted after that run.
Debra: Yes, I'm pretty tired. It was five kilometers.
Sibyl: That's a long way. How often do you do it?
Debra: Twice a week.
Sibyl: Goodness! Don't you think that's too much?
Debra: No, not at all. It keeps me healthy and helps me to lose weight.
Sibyl: It would be good if I could lose some weight but I couldn't do what you do. My body couldn't stand it.
Debra: No pain, no gain.
这成语的另一说法是no gain without pain,例如:He has had a hard life, but now he is rich enough to lead an easy life. There is no gain without pain(他一生吃过不少苦,但现在有点钱,可以轻松过活。
If it isn't hurting, it isn't working(政策不带来痛苦,就不会有成效)。这是no pain, no gain的另一说法。
(1) We cannot have democracy unless we fight for it. (2) Starting as a clerk, she made her way through hardship to the stars and became chief executive of a multinational corporation(她最初是个文员,经过艰苦努力,成就卓著,成为一跨国公司的行政总裁)。
