Hello, I'm Neil Nunes with the BBC News.

The International Olympic Committee has kept the ban on Russia at the Winter Olympics in South Korea in place for the short term. Russian athletes at Pyeongchang will not be allowed to march under their own flag at the closing ceremony in the few hours time. They have been competing under the neutral banner of Olympic athletes from Russia or OAR. The IOC President Thomas Bach said it had been hugely disappointing that two Russian athletes had tested positive at the Games. But he confirmed that Russia's Olympic status would be restored automatically once it was confirmed there have been no other doping violations at Pyeongchang. These sanction then can be lifted if the OAR delegation is continuing to be compliant with the IOC decision of 5th of December and if no new doping cases are reported by the DFSU.

A high-level delegation from North Korea is in the South to attend the Winter Olympics closing ceremony. Officials are led by a controversial General Kim Yeong-cheol. He was previously head of North Korea's military department responsible for sabotage and is widely blamed for an attack eight years ago on a South Korean warship that killed 46 officers. From Pyeongchang Laura Baker. King Yeong-cheol is a highly controversial figure. Many people in South Korea blame him for the sinking of a navy ship that killed 46 sailors. Dozens of protesters tried to block his arrival. Some were holding signs describing him as a war criminal. But if North Korea is sidious about searching for a diplomatic breakthrough, then it's likely that General Kim will be one of the main negotiators. His arrival comes as Ivanka Trump, the US president's daughter also attends the Winter Olympics.

Activist groups in Syria say government airstrikes on the rebel enclave of eastern Ghouta have been continuing in spite of a UN Security Council demand for a ceasefire. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported at least 2 such attacks overnight.

This is the world news from the BBC.
