Donald Trump has urged Republicans to unite on the subject of abortion ahead of next year's presidential election after several US states passed tough new laws to restrict terminations. In the past week, Alabama approved legislation to ban virtually all early abortions. Here's John McManus. Evangelical Christians form a core of voters who want to restrict or even outlaw abortion in the United States. Many of them voted for Donald Trump. And now writing on Twitter, Mr. Trump has confirmed that he is strongly pro-life, except in three specific circumstances: rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother, adding that had also been the position of the former President Ronald Reagan, making explicit that he sees this as an election issue. The president said we must stick together and win for life in 2020.

Swiss voters are taking part in a referendum on whether to tighten the country's gun laws to conform with European Union regulations. After the Paris attacks in 2015, the EU told all Schengen countries，including Switzerland, to restrict automatic and semiautomatic weapons. Imogen Foulkes reports. Switzerland is a neutral, peaceful country, but one that loves its guns. Military service is obligatory for Swiss men. They can keep their army assault rifles after serving. Gun control has traditionally been relaxed. That's because government trusts the people, argues for the gun lobby. But opinion polls suggest voters will go along with Brussels not just in the hope of preventing further terror attacks in Europe, but because although gun crime is low, mental health experts have long pointed to a connection between the easy availability of weapons and the high rate of gun suicide.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to vote in record numbers in the seventh and final phase of the country's general election. His party, the BJP hopes to win a second term in office. Results will be announced on Thursday.
