The UN Security Council is meeting in New York for urgent talks requested by Russia and China over the threat posed by American medium-range missiles. On Monday, the Pentagon said that the missile launch had been successful, hitting a target 500 kilometers away.

Global leaders expressed alarm about the record number of wildfires in Brazil’s Amazon region. The UN Sectary General Antonio Guterres said Brazil’s rain forest is a major source for the planet’s oxygen and diversity, and must be protected. President Macron of France tweeted that the crisis would be given top priority at the G7 summit that is hosting this weekend.

Mr. Macron has told the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that it should be possible to find a Brexit deal without totally redrafting the existing agreement. The President said any new deal could not be far from the existing document and that the Irish backstop was indispensable. Mr. Johnson says he wants to reach a deal.

The United States has expressed concern over the ending by South Korea of a three-year military intelligence sharing pact with Japan. The Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington was disappointed, and urged the two key US allies to continue to engage in dialogue.

A Russian judge has ruled that the opposition leader Alexei Navalny can be released on Friday despite the police requesting that he serve an extra day and half in prison for time spent in hospital. Mr. Navalny said he’d been guarded at all times.

INTERPOL has issued a red notice asking governments around the world to help locate and detain a former Colombian rebel leader wanted in the US for drug trafficking offences. Jesus Santrich went into hiding at the end of June. He once helped negotiate a historical peace deal between the FARC and the Colombian government.
