Britain has entered the transition to a new independent path with the owners firmly on the Prime Minister Boris Johnson to make a success of leaving the European Union. Britain left the bloc at midnight European Time after nearly half a century. Negotiations now will focus on the kind of relationship they envisage in the future. A BBC correspondent says the celebrations and protests at the moment of departure have been absorbed into a general mood of getting on with the talks ahead. David Eades is in Brussels. We are outside the European Commission building and it is from here on Monday that a strategy will emerge as to how to deal with the next phase of building an arrangement, negotiating a deal with the UK, one which Boris Johnson says needs to be completed by the end of this year. So no great fanfare is taking place here over the moment of departure.
The Maldives has rejoined the commonwealth. The island nation first joined in 1982, but withdrew in 2016 after being threatened with suspension over its human rights record and a lack of progress on democratic reform. The Maldive's current president applied for readmittance after his election two years ago.
A special court in the Indian city of Chennai has convicted 15 men of sexual assault and attempted murder after they terrorized an 11-year-old disabled girl over a period of seven months. Prosecutors say they threatened her with knives and filmed her naked to stop her reporting the abuse.
Britain's preparations to host the next global summit on climate change later this year have been left in disarray after the second of the woman appointed to run the event. The government says it wants Claire Perry O'Neill, a former climate change minister, to be replaced by a current member of the cabinet. She's accused the Prime Minister Boris Johnson of failing to hold any serious discussion about the climate conference due to be held in November.
In tennis, the American Sofia Kenin has won her first ever Grand Slam title with a surprise victory over Spain's Garbine Muguruza in the Australian Women's Open. She won the match by two cents to one. Here is Russell Fuller. Sofia Kenin is just 21 years of age, but she is the fourteen seat and actually with a higher ranking than her opponent in this final Garbine Muguruza. Muguruza though has the pedigree at this level. She is a French Open champion. She's also won the Wimbledon title. And after a couple of difficult years, it looked as if she was getting back to the sort of form she showed in winning those two titles previously. But in the match after an uncertain start from both of those players, Sofia Kenin in her first grand slam final was very much the better player. Russell Fuller.
