Hello, I'm Neil Nunes with the BBC news.

The Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has defended his company from accusations that it puts profits before user safety after a former employee turned whistleblower and gave damning testimony to a US Senate committee.

In a blog post, Mr Zuckerberg said the argument that Facebook deliberately pushed content that made people angry was illogical.

The whistle blower, Frances Haugen, said Facebook executives knew their content could harm children and weaken democracy.

Monika Bickert, vice president of content policy at Facebook, rejected the claims, but said external regulation was also needed.

We don't think that we should be making all these decisions on our own.

It's a reason that we have put this information out there in our community standards enforcement report.

It's why we have an independent oversight board.

It's also why we called for regulation for more than 2.5 years and continue to engage with the UK regulators and support their focus on making sure that companies have robust systems in place to keep their communities safe.

The governor of California has once again called for an end to offshore drilling, following last week's massive oil spill off the southern coast of the state.

David Willis is in Los Angeles.

The oil spill took place about 60 kilometers south of Los Angeles off the coast of Huntington Beach, an area nicknamed Surf City USA.

It's thought to have resulted from the rupture of a steel pipeline possibly caused by the anchor of a passing ship.

The result was an oil spill that has grown to around 6 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide and has closed local beaches to boats and tourists.

The area is also home to dozens of species of wildlife and sea birds have been found covered in oil.

Questions are being asked about why it took the company that owns the pipeline 12 hours to report this leakage following complaints from local residents of a foul smell in the area last Friday.

The British government has announced an independent inquiry into the police following the murder of a young woman Sarah Everard by a London officer in March.

Before the killing, Wayne Couzens was able to keep his job despite suspicious behavior.

He was given a whole life term for kidnap, rape and murder.

The main opposition Labour Party spokesman on home affairs Nick Thomas-Symonds said the inquiry was not wide enough.

The inquiry is not on a statutory footing, which means that it's going to be unable to compel witnesses to appear before it.

It's going to be unable to demand the evidence that it needs.

I'm also worried that on what I've heard so far, it doesn't seem to be looking into the wider culture on whether women within policing feel they have that confidence to come forward with concerns.
