President: Use strategic, overall vision as guide

China and Britain should enhance connection of development strategies and deepen cooperation in such areas as finance, nuclear power and investment, President Xi Jinping told visiting British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday.

2月1日，习近平主席对来访的英国首相特蕾莎·梅说，中英两国应加强发展战略对接，深化金融、核电、投资等领域的合作。

The two countries should design bilateral ties from a strategic and overall vision, continue to carry forward high-level dialogues in strategic, financial and cultural areas, and enhance exchanges between the legislatures, political parties and militaries of both sides, Xi said.

习近平表示，两国应从战略和整体的角度发展双边关系，继续在战略、金融、文化等领域开展高层对话，加强两国立法机构、政党和军队的交流。

The president called on the two countries to boost mutual understanding, respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, and properly handle sensitive issues.

习近平呼吁两国增进相互了解，尊重彼此核心利益和重大关切，妥善处理敏感问题。

The two countries should explore cooperation in new industrial areas such as artificial intelligence, green energy, digital economy and shared economy, Xi said.

习近平表示，两国应在人工智能、绿色能源、数字经济、共享经济等新兴产业领域开展合作。

Xi stressed that China supports economic globalization and free trade.

Calling the Belt and Road Initiative an open, transparent, inclusive and mutually beneficial proposal, Xi said that China and Britain could have a higher level of cooperation under the Belt and Road framework.

习近平表示，“一带一路”倡议是一个开放、透明、包容、互利的倡议，中国和英国在“一带一路”框架下的合作水平将不断提高。

Britain was the first Western power that acknowledged the People’s Republic of China, and the two countries have made great achievements in cooperation in all areas, Xi said.

习近平表示，英国是历史上第一个承认中华人民共和国的西方大国，两国在各领域的合作都取得了巨大成就。

Xi said he had met with May twice, at the G20 Hangzhou Summit in 2016 and G20 Hamburg Summit last year, adding that he had good discussions with her during the meetings.

习近平回忆道，他在2016年G20杭州峰会和去年的G20汉堡峰会上曾与特蕾莎·梅举行过两次会晤，并补充说，他在会议期间与她的讨论非常的愉快。

This visit is expected to promote bilateral high-level exchanges, enhance practical cooperation, and inject impetus into the two nations’ ties, Xi said. May is making her first state visit to China since she took office in 2016 and will finish her three-day trip in Shanghai on Friday.

习近平说，这次访问将促进两国高层交往，加强务实合作，为两国关系注入新的动力。此次国事访问是特蕾莎·梅自2016年上任以来首次对中国进行国事访问，并将于2月2日在上海结束为期三天的访问。

Xi said that the global situation is experiencing uNPRecedented and complex changes, and China and Britain, as major countries, shoulder special responsibility in dealing with common challenges such as climate change.

习近平表示，全球形势正在发生前所未有的复杂变化，中国和英国作为主要国家，肩负着应对气候变化等共同挑战的特殊责任。

China would like to make joint efforts with the UK to push bilateral relations to develop in a healthy and steady way in the new era, thus bringing happiness to the people of both sides and peace to the world, Xi said.

中方愿与英方共同努力，推动两国关系在新时期健康稳定发展，为两国人民带来幸福，给世界带来和平。

May said that in 2015, the "golden era" of United Kingdom-China relations was established when Xi made a successful state visit to the UK.

特蕾莎·梅说，2015年，习近平主席对英国进行了成功的国事访问，确立了英中关系的“黄金时代”。

"Since then, I think we have indeed achieved a great deal in enhancing the links between our two countries, both in terms of people links but also trading links," May said.

她说:“从那以后，我认为我们确实在加强两国之间的联系方面取得了很大的成就，无论是在人民交流方面，还是在贸易方面。”

The Belt and Road Initiative proposed by Xi has far-reaching influence all over the world, May said, adding that Britain would like to cooperate with China on jointly building the Belt and Road.

Britain supports free trade and would like to enhance practical cooperation with China in trade, investment, science and technology, environment, culture and the internet, she said.

英国支持自由贸易，愿与中方加强在贸易、投资、科技、环境、文化、互联网等领域的务实合作。

May welcomed China’s investment in the UK, saying that the trade links between the two countries are growing.

特蕾莎·梅表示欢迎中国在英国的投资，称两国之间的贸易联系正在不断增长。

"I have been pleased to bring a very large business delegation here who had a very successful visit," she said. May has been accompanied by leaders of over 50 British business and commercial organizations.

Calling both countries significant players on the world stage, May said that there are global challenges faced by both and "there would be areas on which we can work together".

May arrived in Beijing on Wednesday and took part in the China-Britain annual meeting between heads of government with Premier Li Keqiang at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.

China and Britain signed a dozen deals in areas including trade, finance, healthcare and smart city technology, pledging to further promote the "golden era" strategic partnership on Wednesday.
