President Donald Trump has canceled his historic summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next month.

The meeting, which would have marked the first face-to-face encounter between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, was set for June 12.

"Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting," Trump wrote in a letter to Kim.

特朗普在致金正恩的一封信件中写道：“难过的是，由于你在你最近的声明中表现出来的巨大怒火和公开敌意，我感觉现在不适合与你举行这一安排已久的会晤。”

The final straw, US officials said, was a statement Thursday from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry calling US Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" and hinting that Pyongyang was ready for a "nuclear showdown" should diplomacy fail.

North Korea says Kim Jong Un is still willing to meet Trump "at any time," despite his abrupt cancellation of the summit.

Kim Kye Gwan, a top official at North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, said Trump’s decision to cancel the talks runs counter to the global community’s wishes for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
