VOA常速英语:Top 5 Songs for Week Ending Aug. 6
We’re paying tribute to the five most popular songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles chart, for the week ending August 6, 2016.
It’s a special week, because not only does the number one slot change hands, it goes to a first-time winner.
Number 5: The Chainsmokers & Daya "Don't Let Me Down"
Let’s begin at the beginning: in fifth place, where The Chainsmokers and Daya spend another week with “Don’t Let Me Down.”
With 2016 more than half over, we now have a clearer picture of the year’s biggest hit singles, and “Don’t Let Me Down” is the fourth most-streamed song in the United States to date. Drake leads the list with “One Dance”; Zayn’s in second place with “Pillow Talk”; Joe Jonas and DNCE take third place with “Cake By The Ocean,” while Rihanna rounds out the Top Five with “Work.”
As for Justin Timberlake, well…he just has to make do with winning another award.
Number 4: Justin Timberlake "Can't Stop The Feeling"
Justin steps back two slots to number four with “Can’t Stop The Feeling.” On July 31, Justin won the inaugural Decade Award at the Teen Choice Awards. He says that as a boy in Memphis, he was influenced by the presence of soul great Al Green, who lived down the street from him.
Number 3: Calvin Harris Featuring Rihanna "This Is What You Came For"
Calvin Harris and Rihanna gather steam this week, as “This Is What You Came For” jumps a notch to third place. Calvin is famed for his collaborations, and his latest single “Hype” features British rapper Dizzee Rascal. He’s also recorded “Ole” featuring fellow British singer John Newman, and Jason Derulo says they’re in talks to work together. Offstage, Calvin’s been spending time with singer Tinashe…with Taylor Swift seemingly in his rear-view mirror.
Number 2: Drake Featuring Wizkid & Kyla "One Dance"
Here’s our big change: Drake loses his Hot 100 crown as “One Dance” falls to second place. He dropped a bombshell at his recent music festival. On August 1, Kanye West made a surprise appearance at Drake’s OVO Fest in Toronto to announce a new collaborative album with Drake. How that album will be distributed remains a mystery: West is with Tidal, Drake is with Apple Music. Kanye’s been vocal in his desire for the two services to resolve their differences.
Number 1: Sia Featuring Sean Paul "Cheap Thrills"
Sia earns her first Hot 100 pop singles championship, as “Cheap Thrills” featuring Sean Paul jumps two slots. This is Sean Paul’s fourth trip to the top; he first scaled the summit way back in 2003 with “Get Busy.”
Can they keep the title? We’ll find out next week.
