Immigrant Delegate Marvels at Democratic Process

He has waited for this moment for years.Shashi Gupta has a front-roll seat for a historic nomination,a moment that means more to him because of how far he’s travelled.

“The things that Americans maybe take for granted are so special when you come from the outside.” VOA called up the delegate back home in Virginia in the weeks before the convention.

“The ability of a country to recognize a society, to recognize a problem and, once recognized, to move as a nation to fix it , you know – to me that’s really inspiring.”

He has been involved in the Democratic Party since he moved to the US as a student in the 1970s.Gupta took a break from his Delegate duty in Philadelphia to look at this year’s Hillary Clinton-Bernie Sanders contest.

“This demonstrated such a wonderful way to conduct politics, you know, where you have opposing views, and instead of getting down into invectives and you know, name-calling and so on.You really open up the minds and say, ’OK, what can we gain from each other?’Clinton is the person that I think can get things done. And so Sanders has all the ideas.”

As Clinton clinches the nomination here in Philadelphia,Gupta is already looking ahead to the role his home state could play in the general election.

A swing state that could go Democratic or Republican, Virginia is also the home of Gupta’s friend of ten years——vice presidential nominee, Tim Kaine.

Gupta says Kim’s intelligence and honesty make him a model politician.“I think he will be a big help to the ticket.”

Yes, he expects the politics to be tough this year. But, “this week just reinforces everything that I’ve believed and I’ve known for the 45 years I’ve been here, which is that this political process is among the best that I can think of in the world.”

And Gupta will carry back to Virginia the memories of this convention.
