This bus looks like it’s part of the city’s public transportation system, but instead of passengers it carries over 500 books for children and teens.Everyday from sunrise to dusk, it travels the streets of Kabul opening its doors to those who want to discover the joys of reading.Called Sharma or walnut, the bus is the Afghan capital’s first ever library on wheels.
“I’m very glad I come here, I progress and I read books.”
“The kids have to come here and try to find a way to promote and develop our country. To find a way to get out of war in the country rather than becoming a suicide attacker.”
Despite having a population of over 5 million people, the city of Kabul has only 12 public libraries. The bookmobile offers a wide variety of poetry, history and story books for young readers. And makes many stops in different parts of the city.Freshta Karim is the founder of the portable library.
“I lost the charm of being a child because I didn’t have access to a library, so I decided to launch this project. When kids came to us and read books, I see them as children who enjoy their childhood.Even some kids looks tired and fatigued but once they start reading books they enjoy the experience. We want to bring happiness to children’s faces through books.”
Karim wants to instill a love for reading among the children of Afghanistan,so they can develop the critical thinking skills to better understand the many challenges facing their country. This is the first time that a mobile library has traveled through the streets of Kabul. And there are plans to expand the surface to Provinces beyond the Capital.
