With an MRI patients have to lie often motionless in a long tube.It’s especially challenging for heart patients. It can be very hard, it can be very tiring and there are often very long exams. We schedule them in 90 minutes, an hour and a half slots, which if you’ve even been in an MIR scanner, that’s a long time.

In order to get a clear picture, patients have to hold their breath over and over.In general an MRI takes a long time to require a single image and if you’re moving during the acquisition, that image will get blurring.Researchers in the University of Missouri are working to fix that problem with a programme called Heartspeed.With Heartspeed data analysis software pulls out motion information from the magnetic resonance images. This would allow radiologist to see the heart clearly even if the patient is breathing normally.

We find that we could separate breathing motion from the heart motion quite well using the software and we thought we should try to start applying this to really patient data.

The goal, a more comfortable scan for patient who could breathe in a normal pace without repeated breath holds.Scans will also be much shorter, just fifteen to thirty minutes.Patients will benefit because it would be easier for them to do the exam,hopefully the radiologist who reads it or with cardiologist who reads the MIR will benefit because the images will be much better.The researchers estimate that the Heartspeed technology will be available for clinical use within five years.
