It's lunchtime in Rome during the coronavirus pandemic. Restaurant owner Maria Chiari De Felici brings the menu to a customer. He'll have to keep his hands to himself however if he plans to place an order. Most customers welcome this new way to view a menu. They're happy. Some are surprised and intimidated at first, but then they realize how easy it is to use. Customer Stefano Pratti scans a quick response or QR code, beaming the restaurants menu to his phone. He still verbally places his order, but since he's not actually touching a menu, risks of spreading Covid-19 drop. Good news for Pratti.
Finally after two and a half months of imprisonment, I'm at a restaurant. It's satisfying and if you eat well, it's even better. With staff in a kitchens equivalent of personal protective equipment or PPE, restaurant owners like De Felici hope this is just one step back toward pre-pandemic life. I think we all want to return to life the way we lived before, nothing more. Obviously I hope that with time people trust us more, and take confidence in the extreme safety measures were using here. In addition to masked chefs and scannable menus, the owner cut in half the amount of seating here, and when customers leave, the staff disinfect their tables and chairs.
