国际英语新闻:Brazil dismisses sanctions over Iran's nuclear standoff, prefers dialogue
TEHRAN, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim said here Tuesday that Western sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program cannot be a proper way to solve the issue.
Brazil supports dialogue as the only proper way to solve the issue, Amorim said in the joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki in Tehran.
The Brazilian minister said that his country is interested to play a role in resolving Iran's nuclear standoff "in an appropriate way", and will continue diplomatic efforts in this regard.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki (R) talks with his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorin during a joint press conference in Tehran, capital of Iran, April 27, 2010. Mottaki said that Iran is willing to consider enriching uranium in other countries as suggested by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). |
Asked about the attempts to isolate Iran globally over its nuclear program, he said he does not think there is an international consensus to isolate Iran.
In an interview with the local semi-official Fars news agency on Tuesday, Amorim voiced his country's opposition to further sanctions against Iran, saying Western sanctions against Iran are inefficient.
"We, generally, believe that imposing sanctions will not produce any result and will naturally hurt the poorest people while they will not help find a peaceful solution to the issue," Amorim told Fars.
