本集简介：

Joey's snoring forces Chandler to insist he go to a sleep clinic; while accompanying Joey at the clinic, Chandler meets (and begins dating) Marjorie, who talks in her sleep. Ross tries to talk with Rachel about her feelings, but she just pretends she's fine. However, while feeling kind of desperate she tries to move way too fast with Joshua and ends up scaring him off. Monica picks up Emily's wedding dress for her, and finds she just can't resist wearing it... a lot. Phoebe and Rachel catch the spirit as well, and soon they're all wearing white. Ross and Emily set a wedding date just one month away. Rachel talks with Monica and Phoebe about her unresolved feelings for Ross.

故事梗概

Ross宣布与．Emily准备结婚的消息让大家感到非常吃惊。Rachel
则最为失落，她故意跟Ross讲，她和Joshua不仅有一段serious
relationship,有一种connection，就是那种emotionally，mentally，还包括
physically的那种。但是，事实上，当他同Joshua见面谈他们的
“大
事”
时，Joshua显然逐没有准备好，他拒绝了Racghjel，而且不再接
她的电话，Rachel．说他的留言机非常理解她，她感到很难过(blue)。
Phoebe: I still cannot believe you're engaged! (Ross looks at her) Just 'Cause its happening so fast; not 'Cause you're such a loser.
Ross: Oh. Thanks. Uh, has anyone seen Rach?
Monica: Ugh, she's upstairs not doing the dishes! And I tell ya something! I'm not doing them this time! I don't care if those dishes sit in the sink until they're all covered with---I'll do them when I get home!
Ross: Yeah oh! Hey listen umm, Emily found this wedding dress in London?
Phoebe: Already?!
Ross: Yeah, but it didn't fit. Well, luckily there's a store here that has one left in her size, but I'm the groom, I'm not supposed to see the dress?
Monica: I'll pick it up for you!

订婚(engagement)是人们表示愿意结婚的一种协议，也指the time

between proposal and marriage，即从求婚到结婚的这段时间。形成这种协议
后，这两人(the couple)就可以说是“engaged to be married”，或就说成
“engaged”。

订婚后，男子通常会给女孩子a diamond engagement ring(订婚钻戒)，
男子会把戒指戴在女孩子左手的中指上，因为：It was thought that the

blood vessel in that finger went directly to the heart．罗马人认为左手的中指
是vein of love，虽然我们知道这并不是真的，但是传统嘛，就要继承。

美国人订婚的时间通常会维持在1年左右，随后一般会举行一个
wedding ceremony and a party。在这段时问里，Friends of the bride may
hold a party．大家会送给准新娘子一些礼物。Friends of the man who is
gettirg married则通常会为该男子举办一个bachelor party(告别单身派对)。
通常来讲，Only men are invited to the bachelor partv。

结婚典礼时，新娘(the bride)会和她的准丈夫(would-be husband)
互相交换戒指(rings)，它代表着“白头到老”的意思(the idea that their
union will continue forever)。新娘通常应在同一手指上wears both the

wedd ing ring and the engagemen tring。

当然，订婚之后，任何一方如果觉得对方不合适了。都可以break the
engagement。如果发生退婚，那么女方通常应把戒指以及其他礼物悉数归还
男方。

未婚妻是fianc&，而未婚夫是fianc6(A man who is engaged to a
woman is said to be that woman’s fiancs，and she is called his fianc4e．)。这两
个词在英语中发音相同(pronounced identically)。

与engagement相似的单词还有一个betrothal，也表示婚约，这两个词

有时可以互换(sometimes used interchangeably．)。但是，betrothal这个词
更为正式一些，(a more formal agreement，involving not only the couple but
their families)。

婚纱店的英文说法应为Bridal Shop；挑选婚纱是pick up a wedding
dress；结婚典礼是wedding ceremony；结婚纪念日是wedding anniversary；
新娘是bride；新郎是bridegroom or groom；牧师是pastor or minister；伴郎
是best man；伴娘是maid of honor；女傧相是bridesmaid；男傧相是
groomsman。伴郎和伴娘只能各有一个。还有，女花童flowergirl；男花童
ringbearer；引座员usher。

结婚不仅可以用get married，也可以用get hitched(字面意思：系在一
起)。另外，shotgun wedding是指a marriage that is forced or necessitated
because of pregnancy。这与我们平常所说的“奉子成婚”有些相似。

结婚后，新郎新娘会度蜜月，蜜月是honeymoon。Just Married则表示
“新婚”，你可以经常在电影中看到，新人结婚后，会乘车去度蜜月，而车
子上会有花团做成的Just Married字样。

为了扩展大家英美风俗文化的知识面，下面给大家介绍一些有关英美
等西方国家的结婚风俗。

送交新娘(giving the bride away)是宗教婚礼仪式上的一个重要项目。
在送交仪式上，新娘的父亲护送女儿走向教堂里圣坛的台阶，然后将女儿
的右手递给牧师，牧师(minister)再将新娘的手递给新郎。

在婚礼上，新郎和新娘需要交换戒指(double-ring ceremonies)，圆戒
象征夫妻恩爱长久，幸福生活没有终结。新娘和新郎要当众亲吻。此时，
人们会把大米撤落在新婚夫妇(newlyweds)身上，预祝他们子孙满堂。

婚礼上还有两名小女孩手持花束走在新郎新娘的前面。鲜花不仅能为
婚礼增加色彩，还具有两重意义：一是因为花束轻盈而又容易折断，因此
象征处女的脆弱。二是开花后就意味着结果，所以人们把鲜花看作是处女
时期的结束和怀孕(pregnancy)的象征。

婚宴快要结束时，新娘把花束抛向未结婚的女子，据说，得到花束的
那位幸运的女孩将成为下次婚礼的新娘。

在英美等西方国家的婚礼仪式上，新娘和新郎都有独特的婚礼誓词，

与中国传统的结婚仪式大不一样。一般是由神父问新郎及新娘问题。关于

士对结婚周年纪念日十分重视。结婚的每个周年都有不同的名称，象征不
