本集简介：

Monica and Chandler try to keep their relationship hidden: When Joey comes into the bathroom, Monica has to duck under the bubbles in the tub; Chandler accidentally kisses Monica good-bye in from of the others, so then has to kiss all the girls. Phoebe is irked by all the fun she missed in London; the others decide to take her on a picnic to Central Park, but since that idea sucks they plan a weekend in Atlantic City; just as they're leaving, her water breaks. Rachel, back from Greece and angry about the bad choices she's made recently, gives decision making control of her love-life to Monica. This arrangement is strained to the breaking point when Rachel wants to tell Ross she still loves him, but Monica won't let her. Ross plans to win back Emily by sending romantic gifts.

讲解

英语中，表示“解雇”的词有：dismiss，discharge，kick out，fire，can，relieve，release，remove r sack，shelve，lay off，send away，throw out等。

dismiss表示“解职、开除”时，常使用dismiss sb．from his post(撤销某人的职务)或者be dismissed from the service(开除职务；被免职)。例如：

He was dismissed from his job．(他被解雇了。)

The boss threatened to dismiss all the employees who had expressed their
sympathy for the strike．but it’s all bluff．(老板威胁说要解雇所有同情罢工的员工，但是这不过是恐吓而已。)

If you’re late again you’ll be dismissed．(你如果再迟到，就将被解雇。)

He was dismissed from schoo1．(他被开除了学籍。)

此外，dismiss用作口令时，表示“解散!”

discharge表示“解雇、撤职”等意的时候，经常用于部队英语中，意为“to release a member of the armed forces from service"。例如：前一阵子美国总统大选时，关于民主党总统候选人John Kerry(约翰·克里)的报道可谓数不胜数，一次看到如下文字：There is overwhelming evidence that the avy gave John Kerry either a dishonorable discharge(不光彩的开除)or an ndesirable discharge(不良开除)一which is the equivalent of a dishonorable ischarge without the felony conviction—and that，as a result of such ischarge，he was stripped of all of his famous but questionable Navy awards
and medals．

不过，discharge一词的意思远非仅指“解雇”；它还表示“解除抵押贷款”(dscharge／release of mortgage)；
“卸载”，例如：How long will the ischarge of the cargo take?(卸货需要多久?)；“放电”等等。

kick out意为“解雇”，get／give the kick意为“被解雇”；如：Smith got the kick owing to his laziness．(史密斯因懒惰而被解雇。)

Call可表示“开除(学生)，解雇(职工)”，例如：She was finally

c4n”Pd for missing too much work．(她因落了太多工作，最后被解雇了。)

关于sack，也是很常用的，例如：The boss gave her the sack．(老板解雇了她。)

give sb．the sack／boot／bag／kick等可以表示“解雇；开除”。

如果餐厅的老板得知员工从柜台的抽屉里偷钱，他肯定会说：Steal money from the till?Fire him!(从柜台的抽屉里偷钱?开了他!)因此，干工作还得兢兢业业，不然说不定哪天你就会get the sack(被炒鱿鱼的。)lay， off是指(of an employer)to dismiss workers at a time of low business volume，往往是因为公司不景气，而非出于工人方面的原因。下岗工人一般就说成laid-off workers。

在Friends的第1季第16集中，Chandler的上司Douglas到办公室告诉他，由于公司今年效益奇差，各个部门都得裁员。Chandler第一个要面对的遭解雇的对象是Nina，这可难坏了Chandler。Nina漂亮又迷人，而且两人还关系亲热。他几次话到嘴边都没说出口，结果闹出了不少笑话。请看

Because of the recession，about half of our staff were discharged．(由于经济不景气，我们公司近一半的员工遭解雇。)

提起ugly我总会想起安徒生童话ugfy Duckling(《丑小鸭》)，如今an ugly duckling专门用来形容那些刚开始没什么出息，而后出人头地的人。

如果你养了一条老猎犬，虽然样子很难看，却忠心耿耿，你可以这样说：My old hound dog is ugly as sin，but faithful as the dickens．也可以用(as)ugly as sin来形容人相貌奇丑，比如：Although he’s as ugly as sin，he is very warm—hearted man．(虽然他相貌奇丑，但却有一副好心肠。)

一个人也许相貌丑点，但这并不代表他是an ugly customer(难对付的人；粗暴的人；讨厌而令人生畏的人)，这种人不是相貌丑陋，而是行为丑恶。他会经常使用暴力威胁他人，向人纠缠，死乞白赖地追求女人等等。
比如：You’d better not tangle with him．He’s an ugly customer．(你最好不要跟他发生纠纷。他这个人软硬不吃，很难对付。)

如果你in an ugly mood，你就是处于动辄发怒的情绪之中。如果你酒后寻衅闹事，那你就是an ugly drunk。最后教你们一招。如要听到有人说：The sky looks ugly．那赶紧做好准备，因为这句话的意思是：像是要变天。

此外，excerpts中的“call the shots"．表示“下命令、做最后决定”；blot sb．off表示“把某人凉到一旁不再理会”。
