The One With Joey's Bag

本集简介：

Chandler finds out Monica gives terrible massages but doesn't want to tell her. When the truth comes out, Monica has a hard time accepting it. Joey is auditioning for a sophisticated part in a play, so Rachel offers to help him look the part. She outfits him at Bloomingdales, and part of the ensemble is a "man's bag," which bears a striking resemblence to a purse. Unfortunately, Joey's devotion to the bag ends up costing him the audition. Phoebe's grandmother dies; Ursula, who thought grandma was already dead, skips the memorial. The memorial does have one unexpected guest, however--Phoebe's father, Frank Sr. Without revealing her true identify, she arranges to meet with him later, at which time she reveals the truth... but things are still a little awkward.

故事梗概

Joey又要试镜了，
Rachel为他挑选了一个包，
起初Joey觉
它有点像女包。
但Rachel坚持说，
男女都可以的，
因为它只是个shoulder bag(挎包)， 而且还给他看了一本杂志，
证明男女都背这种包； 之后Joey非常喜欢它，
不管什么时候都背着它。
然而这个包似乎并没有给Joey带来什么好运。

Joey: It looks like a women's purse.

Rachel: No Joey, look. Trust me, all the men are wearing them in the spring catalog. Look. (Shows him.) See look, men, carrying the bag.

Joey: See look, women, carrying the bag. (He puts it on his shoulder and looks at himself in the mirror and likes what he sees.) But it is odd how a women's purse looks good on me, a man.

Rachel: Exactly! Unisex!

首先，我们说说Joey提到的purse。purse一词除了有“钱包”的意思之外(这种意思更常出现在英国英语中)，还指“女士用的手提包”。手提包还可以说成handbag或pocketbook，它是指一种小巧、通常设计地较为时尚的包，能够用来装一些东西(items)，例如：钱夹(wallet)、钥匙(keys)、纸巾(tissues)、化妆品(makeup)，梳子(hairbrush)、以及其他零碎的东西(other odds and ends)。

背包是backpack，而旅行皮箱是portmanteau，女生手中经常拿的零钱包叫做coin purses，通常用来装零钱和各种卡片。

有时为求速记，人们常把you写为u，但我发现有的学生有个错误的认识，他们以为用u很正式，有时也可能是想show off一下，因此即便是在交写作业时，也出现例如What do u think of....这种以“u”取代“you”的做法。事实上，这种写法是不规范的。

到底什么是unisex呢?原来它其实就是“designed for or suitable to both sexes”(为男女两种性别设计的、男女都适宜的，中性的意思)。例如，unisex clothing就是中性的衣服，男女都可以穿；unisex hairstyles是中性的发型，男女生都可以留。总之，和Joey的理解大相径庭。
