本集简介：

Joey gives all the pretty female customers free stuff at the coffee house, in order to get dates with them. Monica is sick and won't admit it. She tries to get Chandler interested in sex, but he's put off by her illness. Rachel's sister, Jill, shows up because she's been financially cut off and has to try to make it on her own. Rachel's worried that there's something developing between Ross and Jill, but somehow ends up actually encouraging Jill to ask Ross out.

故事梗概

Ross问谁有口香糖没有，(没办法美国人就是离不开口香糖。)phoebe说她有，于是她就开始翻起她那个巨大的手提袋。里面的东西真是不少，甚至逐有一袋水，里面装了条金鱼。

phoebe的包里怎么什么都有呀?!Ross看到Phoebe翻出的东西后，改了主意，直说自己很好，不需要了。谁知道phoebe翻出什么样的口香糖呢?!

Ross: Hey does anyone have any gum?

Phoebe: Oh I do! (She grabs her huge purse and starts rummaging through it and taking out various items in a futile search for the gum.) Oh, y'know what? No. (Pause) Wait a second. (She removes a bag filled with water that has a goldfish swimming in it.) I know it's in here somewhere.

Ross: Y'know what? I'm good! I'm good!

这里说说Phoebe的拿东西、找东西的动作。

如果让你描写一个人的动作，你要写他拿过什么东西来。那个“拿”的动作你会用什么英语动词呢?“take"?还有么?还是“take"?看来你的词汇量需要扩大了。下面就来介绍一些关于“拿”的英语动词。第一个是grab(抓过，夺过)。根据Longman Dictionary Contemporary English，grab 意思是to take hold of someone or something with a sudden or violent movement(突然或迅猛地抓某人或拿东西)。

例如：She grabbed the child's hand and ran out of the room．(她抓过孩子的手，跑出了屋子。)

The passenger grabbed for the oxygen mask。(那个乘客抓过氧气面罩。)

在剧中，“Phoebe grabs her huge purse．．．”可见Phoebe有多么急切地给Ross找口香糖呀。grab有引申含义，即obtain illegally or unscrupulously (非法地或不道德地获得某种东西)。例如：grab power(窃取权力)。

第二个是snatch。意思是“take something away from someone with a quick，often violent，movement”(快速从某人处拿走东西，常常使用暴力)。如：The thief snatched her purse and ran．(贼抢过她的包跑掉了。)snatch和grab通常可以互换。它俩之间的区别就是，snatch更强调从别人处拿东西，而grab则强调突然性。

另一个表示“拿”的词是clutch。它可指人，也可指动物去抓。to seize with or as with the hands or claws；snatch(用手或爪子去抓住)。如：The bird swooped down and clutched its prey with its claws．(那只鸟飞扑下来，用爪子抓住了它的猎物。)有时，也指“紧紧地、牢牢地抓住”(to grip or hold tightly or firmly)。如：Sh'e clutched the child's hand as they crossed the street．(当他们过马路时，她紧紧抓住孩子的手。)关于“拿”就说这么多。

下面说说“rummage”这个词。rummage意思是“to search for something by moving things around in a careless or hurried way”(匆忙地乱翻一气)。如：We rummaged through the drawers(我们翻遍了所有抽屉。)

在剧中，Phoebe rummaged her purse．这里“rummage”显示出Phoebe的急躁和马虎的性格，而且还暗示兜子里肯定有很多东西。可见用对一个词可以表达出很多隐含意思。rummage作名词时还指旧衣服，旧玩具等。rummage sale就是指把自己的东西拿出来卖，所赚的钱捐给学校或教堂等这样的活动。
