本集简介：
The One Where Joey Tells Rachel

Ross comes to grips with the knowledge that Joey is falling in love with Rachel. Phoebe meets a guy who she thinks is "Monica's other half," and she introduces them, much to Chandler's dismay. They get along great, and they both really like cheese. Joey takes Rachel out to dinner and tells her he's falling in love with her; Rachel can't return his feelings.

老友们又坐在CentralPerk (中央咖啡馆)的沙发上开始闲聊了。他们这次聊天的话题是soul mate。老友们讨论的是生活中究竟能否找到soul mate这个话题。Rache认为世上可以找到这样的人，她自己就有这样的伙伴。而且那个人就是Russell Crowe(罗素·克劳)。

Phoebe: Oh, hey you guys!

Chandler: Oh, hey.

Rachel: Hi.

Phoebe: Listen. Let me ask you: Do you believe in soulmates?

Rachel: Oh, yes I do. I think that there is one perfectperson out there for everyone. When you find him, you stop looking for him.That's why I stopped looking for Russell Crowe. He'll find me.

老友们在讨论关于soul mate的话题。Rachel说她相信有这样的人，而她的这个伙伴就是Russell Crowe(罗素·克劳)。这个罗素·克劳是何许人也呢?原来他就是主演过Gladiator(《角斗士》)和ABeautiful Mind(《美丽心灵》)的澳大利亚男影星。

那soul mate究竟该怎样翻译呢?咱们还是先看一下soul这个词的含义。也许我们一提到这个词马上想到的是“心灵”(a person’s emotional or moral nature)。Eyes are the window ofthe soul．(眼睛是心灵的窗口。)

其实，soul的意思不止一个。我们一一领教一下。它的第一个含义是精神。英文是这样解释的：the animatingand vital principle in human beings，credited with thefaculties o f thought，action，andemoti。on and often conceived as an immaterialentity(指的是人类所具备的生命力以及充满生机的本性，以及具有的思考、行动以及感情等能力，通常被认为是永恒)。

第二个含义是灵魂。英文是这样表达的：the spiritual natureof human beings,regarded as immortal，separable from the bodyat death，and susceptible to happiness ormisery in a future state(说的是人类的精神本质。人们认为灵魂是永恒的，只有死亡时才与人体分开，同时它也容易受到未来。幸福或痛苦的影响)。

而第三个意思有点恐怖，指的是幽灵(the disembodied spiritof a dead human being；a shade)，也就是人类死亡后脱离人体躯壳的游魂。有意思的是基督教科学派(ChristianScience)用Soul来指上帝(God)。

May God be with you!(愿上帝与你同在!)上帝可以与我们同在，所以soul还可以指普通的“人”(a human being)。比如，“the homes of some nine hundred souls”(大约九百个人的家园)。
第五种含义则是“精华、核心”(thecentral or integral part／the vital core)，综上，soul mate还是译成“心心相印的伙伴”，或者“知己”为好。
