A group of workers have stumbled across a hidden room containing hundreds of paintings believed to date back to the Kingdom of Egypt of the early twentieth century. They made the discovery while carrying out restoration work at Cairo's National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

At least 222 works of art and documents were discovered in what looks like a cellar in the museum. The discovered pieces include paintings and historic documents such as newspapers and maps, some of which date back to the time of Egypt's King Farouk who reigned from 1936 until he was deposed in the Egyptian Revolution in 1952.

Tarek Ma'Moun, general manager of National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, said, "Those artworks represent Orientalists, realist artists and the new classic art. We also found a collection of the work that shows Egypt's ability to compete with foreign art."

The Egyptian Museum of Civilization was built in 1936 during the reign of King Farouk. Its purpose was to document the history of civilization including the Stone Age, Ancient Egypt and the Coptic Age.

But currently the museum is closed to the public while it is being renovated.

The cache of paintings, which tell stories of Egyptian life under a monarchy, were found in a small space.

The paintings are thought to have belonged to the Egyptian royal family. They will now be re-housed and put on display at the al-Jazeera museum, famous for containing thousands of paintings that were part of the royal collection.
