Yu Zhong county is certainly reaping a good fortune from vegetable production. However, there's such a large amount of vegetable waste that it cannot be ignored. How does the waste trouble the locals and how are they tackling the problems?

Harvest season, yet no hand is willing to help. Jiang Haihong is a vegetable farmer in Yu Zhong county, in northwestern Gansu Province. His land is adjacent to the biggest vegetable wasteland in the county. The smell from the wasteland has driven every farm worker away.

Jiang says the amount of vegetable waste in the county has become a heavy burden on local agriculture. In his own cauliflower field, 15 tons of waste leaves are discarded into the neighboring waste land during harvest season. Yet, there are more to be thrown away before the vegetables reach market stalls.

Lin Youwang, a vegetable dealer, said, "The market only takes vegetables that are clean and good-looking. We have to get rid of many of them and get the rest nicely packaged so they can sell."

Wang Lin, head of Yuzhong county, said, "There was very little vegetable waste in the past but now as people's life quality increases, they become picky about the appearance of vegetable."

And for one kilogram of Chinese leaves, half would be discarded before packaging. Step by step, a huge amount of vegetable waste has piled up around the county. However, as it has become a headache for the locals, outsiders flock in with ideas for turning the waste into treasure.

Up to now, more than 100 investors and experts have expressed their will to cooperate with the county with feasible programs to reuse the waste, including producing feed and fertilizer with it. Yu Zhong county also plans to invest 200 million yuan or 31 million US dollars to build an industrial base for vegetable plant that can also process the waste.

Pei Wanjiang, deputy head of Yuzhong county, said, "One million tons of vegetable waste can produce 100 thousand tons of feed, a good profit with a low cost."

Yet the county is restrained by its climate that limits the vegetable economy from scaling up. With a planting season last only half a year, most processing industries do not have enough supply to keep up with the production. This also includes waste processing plants. So the local authorities are focusing on stretching the vegetable production all over a year, which would provide a stable supply of waste that can gear up the processing industry. Local farmers would no doubt benefit from such a sustainable economy.
