美网公开赛:彭帅顺利挺进四强
China's Peng Shuai conquered her doubts yesterday and swept into the semi-finals. She joins Li Na and Zheng Jie as the only Chinese players to reach the last four in a Grand Slam. Peng, in her 37th major, was in the quarter-finals for the first time facing 17-year-old Swiss upstart, Belinda Bencic.
Along the way, Peng took down fourth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska, 28th-seeded Roberta Vinci and 14th-seeded Lucie Safarova, and is the only woman besides two-time defending champion Serena Williams who has yet to drop a set.
Peng takes control early against Bencic, the youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Martina Hingis won the title at 16 in 1997. Peng takes the first game at love with the smash.
But with Peng serving, Bencic doesn't lose confidence, and she fights back to earn a couple of break point chances with a great forehand winner to go ahead 40-15 in the third game.
Although the 28-year-old Peng has never won a singles title, the world number 39 has big-match experience. She and partner Hsieh Su-Wei won their second Grand Slam doubles title at the French Open this year and the experienced Peng shows her court coverage as she chases down the drop shot here.
Peng would then earn her first break of serve on the Bencic error to go ahead 3-1.
With no breaks of serve in the next three games, Peng remains ahead 5-2.
In the 8th game, Bencic double faults and Peng has a set point, and through her steady performance and powerful attacking, she closes out the first set 6-2.
It was all Peng in the 2nd set, as the young Bencic makes a series of mistakes, and the Chinese builds a quick 2-0 lead which would grow to 5-0 until Bencic manages to hold serve in the 6th game. But Peng, backed by big serves, would complete the rout, 6-2, 6-1 in 64 minutes. She will meet either Caroline Wozniacki or Sara Errani in the semifinal.
