The Kremlin has criticized a move by NATO to deploy military equipment in Baltic States neighboring Russia, saying it will take measures to safeguard its own interests and security. The comments follow an announcement by Vladimir Putin that Russia will add 40 intercontinental ballistic missiles to its nuclear arsenal.
Russia's presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov, just the day after Ruassia and US accused one another endangering global security. Dmitri Peskov accused NATO of threatening Russia. He said "It's not Russia that's approaching someone's borders. It's NATO's military infrastructure that's approaching the borders of Russia.
Adding that "All this forces Russia to take measures to safeguard its own interests and its own security."
Wednesday, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter SteinMEIER said the announced increase of Russia's strategic arsenal is unnecessary. Russia's presidential top foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov who said, "Russia is not entering a new arms race because that would hurt Russia's capabilities in the economic sphere". Russia's economy is facing a slowdown this year amid falling oil prices, because oil and gas exports account for large part of Russia's budget revenue.
Russian media reported that the country's massive military budget will be cut by 4% this year as the government may run out of money.
