注:与介词 by 连用的常用词组:
(1) by means of 意为“依靠”、“通过”。如:
He made a fortune by means of industry. 他靠勤劳致富。
He got into the house by means of an open window. 他从一扇开着的窗户爬进屋去。
(2) by all means 意为“一定要”、“当然可以”。如:
A:Can I have a look at it? 我可以看看吗?
B:By all means. 当然可以。
(3) by no means 意为“绝不”、“一点也不”(用于句首,句子要倒装)。如:
I’m by no means happy about his work. 我对他的工作一点也不满意。
By no means should he be left alone. 绝不能把他单独留下。
◆medicine n.
表示“药”,尤指内服药。通常为不可数名词,但指种类时,可用作可数名词。表示吃药或服药,通常用动词 take。如:
The cough will pass away without medicine. 这种咳嗽不服药也会好的。
She has taken a lot of different medicines, but none have
cured her disease. 她已服用了许多药,但没有一种药能治好她的药。
注:表示“治……的药”,一般用介词 for。如:(www.hxen.net)
It’s a good medicine for cough. 这是一种治咳嗽的良药。
There’s no medicine for curing a fool. 没有治傻瓜的药。
◆meeting n.
1. 表示“会议”、“集会”,是可数名词。表示“在会上”,通常用介词 at, 有时也用介词 in。如:
Were you at the meeting last Sunday? 你参加了上周星期日的会议吗?
She is in a meeting at the moment. 此刻她正在开会。
He said it in [at] an open meeting. 这是他在一次公开会议 上说的。
2. 一般不用来表示“晚会”。如:
孩子们在晚会上玩得很开心。
正:The children had a good time at the party.
误:The children had a good time at the evening meeting.
◆memory n.
1. 表示“记忆(力)”,若指具体某人的记忆(力),通常为可数名词,若指抽象意义的记忆(力),通常为不可数名词。如:
The boy has a good (bad) memory. 这孩子记忆力好(不好)。
Memory is a quality which is not highly developed inmost animals. 记忆这种特性在大多数动物身上都不发达。
注:表示“对……的记忆”,一般用介词 for。如:
John has a good memory for names (faces, figures). 约翰对人的名字(面孔,数字)有很好的记忆力。
2. 注意正确理解以下各句。如:
His name escaped my memory. 他的名字我记不起了。
If my memory serves me right (=If my memory doesn’t failme),he is 55 years old this year. 如果我没记错的话,他今年55岁了。
3. 用于 in memory of, 意为“为了纪念”(注意不用冠词)。如:
They’re going to erect a monument in memory of the dead. 他们打算树碑纪念死者。
