1.make a pledge: 发誓，做出保证，许下诺言

When you make a pledge, you should always try to fulfill it.

2.despite the fact that….: 尽管……事实存在（that后面接修饰fact的同位语从句）

They persisted in carrying out the project despite the fact that it had proved unworkable at the very beginning.
尽管那项计划一开始就证明是不切实际的，但是他们还是坚持要实施。

The team made it to the championship despite the fact that they were not up to scratch for the last several games.
尽管他们最后几场比赛表现失常，球队还是夺得了冠军。
