名人教英文:高官沉沦记

香港高官涉嫌贪腐,震撼政府内外。我于英文报章有评论,在此摘录了几段,读者可留意当中遣词用字。

in quick succession (接二连三地), hong kong's top leaders have become embroiled in (被卷入) scandals (丑闻) involving flagrant flouting (公然藐视) of the law, dishonest cover-ups or practices bordering on (近乎) corruption.(注:flagrant与blatant同义,选用前者是为了和flouting押头韵(alliteration)。)

hot on the heels of(紧接着) the discovery of henry tang's illegal basement, local tabloids (小报) were buzzing with (闹哄哄地流传) stories of chief executive donald tsang receiving lavish (铺张的) entertainment and taking off for holidays on the yacht or private jets of the city's most flamboyant (炫耀的) moguls (大人物).(注:private jets是私人喷射飞机,jet-set lifestyle形容周游列国的富豪生活。)

to cap it all (更糟糕的是), rafael hui, former chief secretary, was arrested by the independent commission against corruption.

it is deeply disturbing that tsang and hui, who started from the bottom as career civil servants, would pay such scant regard to (忽略) the importance of maintaining a lifestyle commensurate with (相称于) the income and position of a public servant.

decades ago, when i first started as the lowest form of life in the government's management cadre (管理团队), our leaders would remind us that we wouldn't become fabulously rich but we would have the opportunity to reap (获得) considerable satisfaction from serving our community.(注:the lowest form of life原指最低等生物,用以自嘲是最低层人员。)
