名人教英文:sentence formation 句子构成
english is now the indisputable global language of communication. many claim that it is a language which is easy to learn and, what's more, easy to learn badly.
through this weekly column, i hope to share with my readers the essentials of the english language together with the many oddities, peculiarities and distinctive features of the english language (1).
each week i shall write a short passage, the text of which is designed to introduce and explain a specific topic chosen for the week, with footnotes in chinese, denoted by a number in brackets.
in many ways, these footnotes are as important as the text itself as they seek to illustrate the nuances of the language apparent only to those who know english well.
the topic for this week is sentence formation. many people frequently make mistakes in using english when they do not know how to construct a sentence or put words together to make a sentence.
to construct a sentence, there are some basic rules to follow:
a)every sentence must have a subject and a predicate; and
b)every sentence must have at least one main clause which is able to stand
independently on its own (2).
