All hell broke loose
John: Hi, Kris is that you. I've been trying to phone you ever since we knew the hurricane was heading your way. Is everything all right?
Kris: Yes, we're all OK, nobody's been hurt, but when it hit us, all hell broke loose, with incredible winds, torrents of rain and debris flying around everywhere.
John: Has there been a lot of damage?
Kris: Oh sure. All our windows were blown out and we lost the roof.
John: Oh my god. Where are you now?
Kris: We're in the emergency shelter at the local school.
But wherefore thou alone? / Wherefore with thee / Came not all hell broke loose?(为什么只有你? If the police go on strike, all hell will break loose(警察罢工,就会引起大混乱)。
Debris本是法文,英文借用过来,指“被毁坏对象的碎片”或“垃圾”,例如the debris from an explosion是“爆炸造成的碎片”,the debris in a park则是“公园里的垃圾”。
All our windows were blown out的blown out二字。 The door was blown out by the winds / by the force of the explosion(那道门被风 / 爆炸的力道摧毁)。
