in linguistics, the word "gerund" refers to a verb used as a noun in its "ing" form. gerunds are associated with certain customary ways of saying things. many learners of english are often confused as to when to use "gerunds" and when to use "infinitives". in most cases gerunds and infinitives are interchangeable. however, in certain circumstances, only "gerunds" are used and not "infinitives". the best way to learn how to use gerunds properly is through frequent practice. grammatical rules might help; but, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect!
as a verbal-noun, a gerund may be used as the subject or object in a sentence.
e.g. dancing is interesting. ("dancing" is a gerund used as the subject of the sentence.)
e.g. i love dancing. ("dancing" is a gerund used as the object of the verb "love").
tradition has it that gerunds are used in the following circumstances:
a. gerunds are used with certain verbs as listed below.
(all verbs are in bold font. all gerunds are in bold italics and underlined.)
i admit cheating on my wife.
i avoid teasing him.
i cease competing with him in school.
i delayed filing my tax returns.
please don't mind me talking in class.
i often neglect doing my homework.
i do not permit students talking in class.
i prefer sitting here.
i suggest teaching students english.
