名人教英文：raise、rise和arise 

raise、rise和arise看来相似，但用法有异，大部分情况下不能互换。raise和rise同样既可作名词，又可作动词。不过，raise是及物动词（transitive verb），后面直接跟名词；rise是不及物动词（intransitive verb）。

raise (raised, raised)

1.升起、举起（对象）：
a.police officers raise the national flag at the golden bauhinia square every morning.（升旗礼叫flag-raising ceremony。）
b.please raise your hand if you know the answer.

2.提高（数额）：the company will raise salaries by 5%.
rise (rose, risen)

1.（对象）升起、上升：
a.the sun always rises in the east.
b.sea levels around the world are rising because of global warming.

2.（数额）增加：
salaries in hong kong are expected to rise by 4.5% on average next year.
除此之外，raise和rise各自有其他意思。raise 可解作“筹集”（如raise funds）、“提出”（如raise an objection）、“养育”（如raise a child）等。rise可解作“起立”（everyone please rise.）、“耸立”（the tower rises above other buildings in the town.）、“冒起”（this actress has risen to fame very quickly.）等。
