名人教英文:clauses 子句

by definition, every sentence must have a main clause. every clause has a subject and a predicate, which includes its verb. 照定义,每个句子都会有一个主要的子句。每个子句都会有其主词及谓词,包括其动词。

different clauses use different types of welding words or conjunctions to organise the ideas of a sentence together. 不同的子句是用不同种类的连接字把其句子里的意思联合起来。

there are two types of clauses:
1) independent clauses 独立子句
2) dependent clauses 从属子句

independent main clause 独立子句
eg, my brother found a nest.

the above is a simple sentence with one independent main clause.
a balanced sentence usually has two independent clauses of equal importance, linked together by conjunctions such as "and", "but", "yet".
一个平衡的句子通常是指两个相等重要的子句,透过连接字联合起来。

eg, let us never negotiate out of fear but let us never fear to negotiate. — jf kennedy
我们不要因害怕而谈判;但是我们永不要害怕谈判。

dependent clause 从属子句
dependent clauses must depend on their independent main clauses to make sentences, as shown below.
从属子句必须依靠其独立的主要子句才能成句,举例如下∶

(1)adjectival clause (also known as "relative or contact clause")
this clause works like an adjective to qualify its antecedent, usually a noun.
eg, my brother, who is kind, found a nest.
the above "who is kind" describes the antecedent "brother". the welding word is "who". other welding words include "which", "whose", "whom", "that", "when", "where".
