港生考gre、gmat、sat等试时,往往被critical reading的问题难倒。critical reading的critical不解作批评,而是指小心分析判断。critical reading要求考生指出作者的真正想法,因此考生必须掌握字面意思和实际意思之间的微妙差异(nuances)。
最近,大型装置艺术rubber duck风靡全港,博客evan fowler月初有评论,文笔甚佳,其中一些语句更是学习critical reading的好例子。例如:
the sight of this 16.5m tall inflatable toy rubber duck being tugged into the harbour to its berth at ocean terminal turned more than a few heads, and has arguably attracted more media publicity than at any of its previous stops....
turn heads即引人回头注目。fowler说rubber duck "turned more than a few heads",当中more than a few是understatement(刻意的轻描淡写),实际意思不是说rubber duck只得到“多于几个”人留意,而是指它得到许多人注视。
