Big upset on American Idol. A clearly sound "Kris Allen "---another sweet, soulful singer from Conway Arkansas rocked and shocked many last night when he was named the latest Idol winner. Here's Andrea Canning.

Kris Allen! In a major upset, Kris Allen, the down-home country boy from Arkansas proved America still loves the underdog.

"The dark horse comes back and wins the nation over. I'm sorry. I don't even know what to feel right now."

Two worlds collided when Allen faced off against Adam Lambert, an androgynous glam rocker known for his signature "guy liner". The finale didn't disappoint with big stars, and bizarre moments.

But for many, the season marks something bigger than a new champion. Was America not ready for its first perhaps gay idol?  "A lot of people were trying to tear him down based on his personal life. And that maybe helps sway the voters in the other direction."

And it's the actual singing that has created superstars. American Idol contestants have produced 16 top ten hits, won six Grammies and even an Oscar.

Being crowned the American Idol isn't always worth its weight in platinum. Champions Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard were both dropped from their labels after weak CD sales. But fourth runner up, Chirs Daughtry had the fastest selling rock album in history. So win or lose, who's got the season nine's staying power?

There's a million Krises out there in pop music. Regardless of what happened. Adam will still have a career whether it be putting out records or most likely on Broadway.

If Simon has his way, there would be room for two. "I though you were both brilliant."

That was quite a show last night. Adam was very gracious throughout and Kris really gained momentum and every time he performed he made the songs his, he really did.

Now I watched Adam over the weeks and he always was considerate of others. You could tell that. Maybe he knows he's got something and everybody in America knows that. There are two things you won an American Idol, or you win the career round. And they are two different contests in many ways.
