Bankruptcy increases the risk of early death as much as heart disease, according to new research by Northwestern University.

Researchers found that people who lost 75 percent of their wealth were 50 percent more likely to die during the 20-year study — suggesting that the shock of sudden financial hardship could lead to serious illness.

Furthermore, of the 8,700 people studied, those who lost a home were 87 percent more likely to die prematurely than those who did not.

The data was surprising, Lindsay Pool, research assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern, told NPR. The risk of mortality has increased 50 percent over a 20-year period .
