VOA常速英语:World’s Seas Getting Better Protection(翻译)
President Barack Obama speaking at the Our Ocean conference announced the establishment ofthe first national marine monument in the Atlantic Ocean.
Followed a month’s action last month to expand a similar zone of the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific, the president told government ministers from numerous countries and other international delegatesa lot more needs to be done as the chemistry of the ocean changes and sea levels rise, threatening to sink livelihoods and entire communities.
“I know that in a contest between us and the ocean eventually, the ocean will win one way or another, so it’s us that has to adapt. Not the other way around."
Secretary of State John Kerry at the event’s opening pointed outpointed that there are now 500 dead zones in the world’s seas where “life simply cannot exist.”
“We’re here because we have to do more and we have to do it faster.”
The conference is not only focused on environmental issues.Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is another major concern.
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio unveiled at the conference a new, free technology he partly fundedthat will allow users to monitor global fishing practices.
“I encourage everyone to check it out.”
It combines satellite technology with radar on vessels to allow anyone with an Internet connectionto trace the paths of thousands of commercial boats in an attempt to curb illegal fishing.
